Committee Minutes - August 2001
Boy Scout Committee Meeting for August
August 29,2001
Present: Terry, Norm, Colin, Chris H., Greg, Robert D., Jaime M., and Nancy H.
Treasurer's Report:
Checking account ending balance as of today is $1503.02. About
$300 to $500 of this amount is earmarked for individual scouts'
accounts. There is $153.20 in the Greeley scout store account.
About $100 is still needed to finish up the patrol boxes.
PLC Camp-out Report:
The troop patrol leaders and their assistants were on a camp-out
this past weekend to set goals and a calendar for the coming year.
The troops' goals will be printed on the calendar of events for
the year. It was noted that every active scout advanced at least
one rank this year. They discussed scheduling into the calendar
3 fund-raising one-day events this year. They also would like
to get those patrol boxes finished!! They agreed that communication
among the boys needs to improve about scheduled events, so it
was agreed that patrol leaders would make phone calls as reminders
on Sundays. They also wanted to make better use of time at meetings
by breaking the time up into scheduled blocks for certain activities,
for instance 15 minutes set aside for patrol meetings. Also the
younger scouts may be split from the older scouts for blocks of
time.
Junior Leader Training Camp was discussed as a requirement for the Senior Patrol Leader and the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader. This is a weeklong camp in August. In order to run for nomination of either position in July, those scouts must already be signed up for the camp by June. It was decided by the Committee members that the cost of this camp needs to be paid for by the individual scouts with hardship cases being considered on a case-by-case basis. Regular patrol leaders and their assistants may be able to attend weekend training sessions this year.
The scouts decided they would like their patrols to try to earn the National Honor Patrol Award this year by meeting the requirements listed in the Scout manual. That is why fewer troop camp-outs are planned, to allow for patrol camp-outs.
Another goal is to increase uniform usage. They decided that green pants are required, not gray, or khaki-colored, but only green. Occasional prizes are still being awarded this year to the best-dressed patrol. Terry suggested the prizes be new cooking items for their patrol boxes.
A long discussion of the planned calendar was next and the calendar was approved.
September Events:
Saturday, September 8 - Work on patrol boxes, painting & hardware,
Greg's house, 9 am-12 noon.
Sept. 14-16th - Order of the Arrow weekend (only for those involved)
September 26th, Wednesday- Color Guard at Rockies game. 7:05 game
time. Scouts need to be there at 5:30. More info, coming. Tickets
will be available for parents.
Sept. 28-30th- Fall Camporee at BDSR. A scout skill event.
Venture Crew
This is an independent group from the troop with Scott H. as the
advisor. Requirements are age 14 and must have finished the 8th
grade. A discussion was held about this group. It was discussed
again how to continue to keep the older scouts interested in the
troop's activities.
Uniforms:
There was a discussion about medals to replace the rank badges,
as the "old-timer" scouts, Terry and Norm, used to wear.
It was decided to tell parents that these were available and leave
it up to individuals if they wanted to purchase the additional
medals.
A discussion followed on the use of Class B uniforms (red t-shirts) in the summer and whether or not t-shirts from other scouting events could also be worn. It was decided by the Committee that any shirt from another scouting event that has the troop number on it could be worn to weekly meetings, but keep the red shirts for outings. Class A uniforms (the khaki shirts) need to worn at other times of the year and for travel to and from camp-outs and camps. The dark green venture patrol shirts are also okay for weekly meetings but the khaki shirt must be worn for formal occasions such as Court of Honor.
Next Committee Meeting, Wednesday, Sept. 26th, Terry's house,
7 pm. All parents are welcome to come!
